FOREIGN LANGUAGE
DEPARTMENT
The offerings of the Foreign Language department are all elective
courses. Successful
completion of each course merits one elective unit of
credit. These
courses assist students in developing an ability to
communicate in a foreign language.
The objective of all coursework is to hone
skills in the four linguistic areas of listening,
speaking, reading, and writing.
Related geographical and cultural lessons are
incorporated in each course of study.
Spanish
I
Spanish I is a beginning-level course that
guides a student’s initiation and development in the
language. Basic
conversational patterns and elemental grammatical
structures are the primary focus of the course.
Oral communication is required of the student.
Spanish
II
Spanish II continues the student’s progress
in developing communication skills in the language.
On this level more attention is placed on verb
forms and on intermediate grammatical structures.
Oral and written communication is expected of
the student.
Spanish
III
Spanish III strengthens the student’s
linguistic proficiency through reading and writing
activities. Hispanic
literature, history, and culture serve as interesting
subjects for these activities.
Round-table discussions in Spanish further
develop the student’s comprehension of the topics,
and offer opportunities for natural oral expression.
French
I
French I introduces basic pronunciation,
grammatical structures, and communication.
On this level emphasis is placed on the
development of oral communication skills, and the
student is expected to communicate in this way in
daily interchange.
French
II
French II further develops the
basic linguistic skills acquired in the first level of
study. More
stress is placed on verb tenses and on grammatical
constructions of the intermediate level.
The student is expected to engage in both oral
and written communication on this level of.
